The first ever match between the Lilywhites and Brackley Town was a Southern League Cup tie in November 1998, though we had to wait other 10 years for the very first league match.

While James Stevens, who had joined on a two weeks work experience from Southend United was making his making his only appearance for the Lilywhies.

10.11.1998 Cambridge City 4 - 3 Brackley Town 1st Round 1st Leg Cambridge City team: Nicky Rust, Marvin Harriott, Richard Chattoe, Steve Holden, Jason Carter, Ben Sweet, Mark Reeder, Ian Brown, Phil Starbuck, Adie Cambridge and Neil Cogger. Subs used were Robbie Nightingale, Ben Galliers and Lee Owen. Nicky Rust , who had signed from Braintree, was making his debut, while Robbie Nightingale came of the bench to make his too. The Lilywhites found themselves two down against lower league side, Brackley, before Ian Brown scored twice to pull the scores level. Lee Owen then put the Lilywhites in front before Brackley equalised from the penalty spot. Then Ian Brown completed his hat-trick, which gave the Lilywhites a small lead to go into the second leg.
