Bury Town

Founded in 1872, Bury Town F.C. was originally known as Bury United until 1922. They were the first team that the newly founded Cambridge Town played against. The Lilywhites also have the honour of being the first club to visit Bury Town for a match under floodlights in 1953. The match being played at their old King's Road Ground, which was their home from 1888 to 1976.

3.10.1908            Bury United 2 - 1 Cambridge Town                                                                                                                  Cambridge Town team was A L Wakefield, W Kisby, R H Porter, E Everitt, J Richardson, L H Halls, R Doig, A E Murkitt, R Goodman and W Shipp. The Lilywhites had to play one short as G Unwin found it impossible to make the journey shortly before the team left by train. This was the very first match by Cambridge Town and the honour of scoring the first goal for them went to R Doig, who scored in the 44th minute.
